I have always wanted to host a Chinese New Year/Lunar New Year party. Like Crazy Rich Asians style and hire lion dancers and everything! Could this be the year? The Lunar New Year begins on January 29 and is the year of the snake. New year eve is January 28 which is when most families celebrate with a dinner before celebrating for a few weeks (around 15 days in Chinese culture).

I collaborated with Pottery Barn for an amazing Lunar New Year line of products earlier last year and some of these items are available again this year!

There are two areas I want to share with you, the tablescape and the food area which has lanterns and planters I’m really excited about this unique set up! All links will be at the end of this post, there will be thumbnails with the product photos and you can click on them to start shopping.

See the reels I created with Pottery Barn!!! I can’t believe this is actually happening and I was able to work with one of my longtime favorite brands!

Personal story

I am a fourth-generation Chinese American. More on this – so the count of generations is interesting and varies, but generally, the first generation of immigrants that arrives to America is considered the first generation, then their children are the second generation. In my family, there were two generations that arrived to the US at the same time. Then, my dad was born in the US (second generation), so I can be considered the third of forth depending on how you decide to count.

I grew up in a household that always celebrated the Lunar New Year! What I remember the most is enjoying so many favorite foods, some special just for the new year, and time with family and friends all around the city and even traveled a few hours to visit my grandma when she lived in San Francisco. I remember watching the Chinese Lion Dance performers along the streets of San Francisco Chinatown. When I hear the drums, cymbals and firecrackers I am reminded of my excitement from childhood!

Lunar New Year tablescape

Let’s start with the tablescape. I thought about a table of 8 since it’s a very lucky number for the Chinese culture, but I couldn’t pass up a table setting for 12 because the more the merrier.

Last year’s Lunar New year was very special not only because it’s was my husband’s Chinese zodiac year, but also for the first time, both sides of our families were in town over Lunar New Year.

The dragon details make this collection timeless.

The dragon is iconic, and in Asian mythology symbolizing power, wealth, and good fortune which makes this collection significant and perfect for those who believe in celebrating new beginnings with a fresh and stylish Lunar New Year themed tabletop.

I also created the centerpieces tied with money. I spray painted the wood which is grapevine branches from Pottery Barn and bought the coin charms from Amazon. Everything that can be linked, will be linked at the end of the post.

I’m wearing a dress that belonged to my mother from her professional singing days. She traveled throughout Asia performing on stage and television in her twenties.

My mom text me saying, “My mother designed this Chinese sequin dress, I wore this beautiful sequin Chinese dress when I was on the stage do my floorshow when I singing in Asia country (Hong Kong, Singapore, Philippine, Malaysia, Vietnam etc) those peony flowers so beautiful.”

The Lunar New Year Food table

I’d call this the snack table/food bar set up, or you can make it an egg roll table! So many unique pretty trays to present desserts like lychee, some drinks before hand, mix it up with different trays.

My parents and I went to the 99 Ranch store and filled up two carts with tons of food and snacks! During this shoot it was so funny to see Benjamin sitting and just enjoying the snacks as I set up the table.

I made the money tree with some branches from Pottery Barn and spray painted them gold. The blossoms are also from Pottery Barn in the white vase. I used some floral form inside to keep them propped up.

The ornaments and red envelopes are from Amazon. I also have to thank my neighbor for picking up the Chinese knots and to-go boxes for me while she was in California and drove them back! So sweet of her!
