Planning a Christmas Ornament Party: My Hosting Tips & What I’m Changing This Year

Christmas is not up yet and I feel behind! I plan to start soon but this means I must tackle my storage of shame which is removing a lot of the junk I have just thrown in there over the past year. I now need to figure out where to put it (Uhaul Pod) before we begin renovations!

But now that I am back, I want to discuss hosting an ornament or favorite things party.

Let’s first begin with a few things I think you should do then I’ll follow it with what I’m modifying – not to confuse you but to give you even more options!

#1 – Sort wrapped ornaments by a color category

Find a place to rest the ornaments. Have labels:

  • Red and Green Traditional
  • Neutral or Metallic
  • Colorful
  • Blue and white (a new category this year)

Right at the start your guests will have success with their chosen ornament by either stealing (if you are doing stealing), or picking a color in the category.

#2 – Instead of numbers, Have guests write a fun fact about themselves on a card

Take an index card of cut pieces of paper into cards and pass around on a tray with pens for everyone to take and write a fact about themselves that they of course won’t mind being shared with others.

The hostess just picks one randomly reads it, the person says who it is, or people can guess, and they can elaborate on the fact too! Some friends want more details if the fact is really interesting so it’s fun to allow guests to get to know one another. Then that guest selects their ornament, then they get to grab the next fun fact card to read, it gets everyone involved!

This is one of my favorite ways to warm up the crowd when they don’t know each other and they can then have a starting point for conversations in the future or just remember a fact about someone new!

Now, what I’m changing up this year:

  1. I am supplying the ornaments and guests CAN bring one if they want, unwrapped. I want the evening to be stress-free and just enjoyed. It’s a lot already to bring, make, wrap, dress up that I want the evening to be relaxing and my friends to feel hosted.
  2. Ornaments will be on a table and unwrapped.
  3. There will be no stealing. This will save on time and also good for anyone who does not like the spirit of stealing.

As always, I have all the food and drinks. No potluck style. Cater the entire experience.

I’m off to go back into my storage now and get some things sorted and some Christmas decor up!

Before I go though, let me share this cute store called Lowery’s Dial in Old Alexandria, VA. I want to do this in my dining room, another moment!
