Italy Itinerary and Outfit Details

Italy itinerary ideas blogger Diana Elizabeth Steffen phoenix lifestyle blog
Amalfi Coast, Amalfi

It’s taken me a week to get back to life, cleaning up, socializing again (yay!) and I wanted to write a quick blog post for my friends who asked about our Italy itinerary! I also needed to get around to editing photos and still need to get to that and order an album which I do this for every international trip.

If you are curious about the trip, this is the post with the rundown of where we went, how many days we went, and any additional tips. Outfit links are at the bottom of the post!

Tuscany
Amalfi Coast

The spots we visited over 13 days:

  • Venice
  • Florence
  • Cinque Terre
  • Siena
  • Pisa
  • Tuscan countryside
  • San Gimignano
  • Rome

Travel breakdown of days

Here is an actual breakdown of how many days we spent in each city/town and how we went around. This was all mapped out and planned and booked by Brittany and she looked for hotels by the train station or ferry so we didn’t have to drag our luggage too far. We booked excursion tours for the day you can find almost anywhere on the web, I used Project Expedition. To stay organized we used WanderLog and SplitWise app to divide expenses.

So to dive into the days and what we did each day so you understand how the trip went, here is a better idea:

July 17 – Travel day. Phoenix to JFK (5 hours), JFK to Venice (8 hours). Again, do not recommend travel in summer months, so hot!
18 – Venice
19 – Venice train to Florence
20 – Florence: Day trip excursion to Pisa, Cinque Terre (5 towns: get day pass for the train)
21 – Florence:  Day trip excursion to Siena, San Gimignano Tuscan countryside
22 – Florence to Rome arrive afternoon by train
23 – Rome: Morning excursion tour of Vatican + Sistine chapel
24 – Rome: Morning excursion tour Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill
25 – Rome
26 – Rome to Naples. Train to Pompeii for the day: get a tour.
27- Naples, ferry to Amalfi Coast.
28 – Amalfi  Coast: Bus to Positano, ferry to Capri, back to Amalfi.
29 – Amalfi to Naples
30 – Naples airport: Flight home. Naples to JFK (9 hours), JFK to Phoenix

That is 13 days of exploring.

Tips/Notes:

  • If I could, I would add a day to Venice and another day to Amalfi. We definitely packed it in. You could skip Pompeii if it’s not of any interest to you but that was very special to me. Also Cinque Terre, if I had to pick between that or Amalfi, I would go to Amalfi. Capri is nice but it is probably best and fully enjoyed if you are rending a boat for the day and you are swimming in the water and doing all those water things.
  • Also, always pay for a tour at unique spots. A guide will help you understand what you’re looking otherwise it’s a bunch of old stuff that looks the same. It is worth the guide and you can cut the long line when you have a guided tour!
  • I would never go again in July or summer time (I had no choice because my best friend lived in Rome at that time and to visit her I had to see her in July). It was so hot and humid. Check the weather before you go, but I prefer much cooler weather when I am out and about walking because my temperature goes up, so I like 60-75 sunny if possible. Ireland was nice weather to me even though it rained! The sun is also quite fierce there so take a UV umbrella! Also if you are going somewhere hot pack this rechargeable neck fan!
  • When you check in the hotel and get a map, ask the desk for recommendations on where to go and see things! Locals can give the best tips! Even food recommendations!
Like every where you travel, I like to look up tipping and cultural etiquette, how to say hello, thank you, good morning and good evening.

If you want to see what I brought home from Italy:

Venice

It was a great time visiting my best friend Michelle and her family and traveling with my friend Brittany! We saw so much and ate and shopped like crazy! It was a very fun experience because there was so much beauty to take in – the artisans, the history, the…food, everything!

Italians are so kind and it was so easy to get around because they were so helpful, speak English and are truly welcoming! What a wonderful country with great hospitality and warmth! I can see why friends want to go back again and again! I even applied for a Delta credit card when I returned because now I want to travel comfortably internationally (I’m telling you it’s worth it!). Brittany and I upgraded right behind first class on our way home and it was so comfortable! We joked we enjoyed the entire 9 hours back and didn’t mind being on the plane longer.
