Early summer is quiet around here in Phoenix. The heat starts to set in, the children are out of school the first week few weeks of May, and families adjust to having everyone home for a few months. For us who can’t say no to an invitation, these next few months allow us, guests and hostesses to slow down for a bit. No FOMO because no one is really doing anything other than being with their family, or escaping some place where the weather is more tolerable.
I’ve embraced this because it’s my time to rest. I can work on home projects that have needed my attention. Also the restaurants and our favorite places are less crowded because the snowbirds have left, and the locals are heading out of town. Here’s what we’ve been up to these past few weeks.
We’ve gathered the last of the peaches off our four year old tree and I’ve successfully made three delicious peach cobblers using the Pioneer Woman peach cobbler recipe. I tried to make the biscuits separately instead of on top of the peaches, and that technique made me burn a few so keep your eye on them and take them out right away.
The harvest was decent, but I felt like I had less than before – unsure why. Maybe the peach tree didn’t have enough time to chill since our winter wasn’t very cold in Zone 9b. I posted a reel about the peach fruit tree cage as a joke I expected to tank on Instagram but instead has gained over 400k views. What makes sense on Instagram, I’ll never understand and I don’t bother to care.

I have successfully grown a Big Daddy hydrangea in Zone 9! Thank you Lizzy for encouraging me and showing me her plant. This plant is against the wall facing north and in complete shade all of the time! I did it! What is not shown is the dead hydrangea the Oakleaf I planted and possibly overwatered. I have yet to accept defeat and so its corpse is still in the ground. I will replace it this fall with the other variety, the successful one I bought from The Home Depot.

Since the heat is so fierce and the roses are turning to crisps like being in an air fryer, I cut them and bring them in to enjoy. Not Benjamin’s favorite thing since little bugs come in too but I keep them on the kitchen windowsill so I think it’s fine. The lavender roses are from Trader Joe’s, Benjamin bought them. He knows I cannot stand the color purple for the most part (but it’s odd, I do like purple flowers in the garden, it’s part of my color palette), but once I mixed them in with some pink it wasn’t that bad!

I’m still obsessed with those little frogs I picked up from an estate sale. They make me happy every time I see them.
I’m still in love with those Paddy O’ Furniture storage carts. They look perfect here and right now just have some plants and garden things for now. Now look at that light on the left, it’s going to get a little makeover soon, well replaced actually. But the lighting fixture is going to be pretty cute!

That’s for next week! I ordered about 3 different colors of spray paint because I’m a nut and I was too lazy to go to the store to make a decision so I ordered them all online. Hee hee.
