I
text my friend Melissa after the new year asking her when her blood orange tree would be ready for the pickin’. A few days later she confirmed her citrus trees were ready! She has grapefruit, lemon, mandarin, blood orange, and another mandarin variety. We showed up with baskets in hand to gather and we chatted and caught up as we picked off fruit and put them in baskets. We have citrus coming out of our ears now and I’m not sure what to do but probably juice them!

I also love to decorate with lemons all over our home, in a bowl, I use them more for decoration than I do to cook with….shhhhh.

Citrus is one of the 5 C’s of Arizona. I learned this when I did pageantry (I’m a transplant from Northern California, let CA at the age of 17 to attend college in Tucson). Copper, Cattle, Citrus, Cotton and Climate!

I think this is also something little Arizona children learn just as California children learn about earthquake drills in elementary school and how to survive floating for hours in the ocean (mandatory swim class).

My friends are in awe when I tell them we had regular earthquake drills growing up!

Citrus is ready in the winter! I actually didn’t learn this until we moved into our home and saw when citrus was ready with our grapefruit. I have always thought of it as a summer fruit, refreshing, and just never thought about when citrus was ripe! But you can leave it on the tree for months past winter like a refrigerator that stores it, but eventually by spring you need to clear the tree so the new buds can form and the cycle begins again. We currently have in our own yard, pink lemon, kumquat, mandarin orange, Mexican lime and a lemon tree.

I wore my cardigan from Odd Molly which is now 50% off! I love Odd Molly’s pieces they are one of a kind, unique and such high quality. This cardigan has hand embroidered flowers, crochet details and a lovely cable design, and under $100, it’s worth adding it to your closet. I also had knit Hunter socks on but I don’t have a photo of me head to toe because truthfully it didn’t look great haha!

It was a fun afternoon of catching up with my friend, meeting her new ferrel pet cat, her old dog who is 17 years old, and holding a chicken for the first time named Bertha. It was a day to be enjoyed picking citrus off her trees on a beautiful mild sunny winter day in Phoenix.

Diana Elizabeth is thankful she can juice oranges but the grapefruit and the lemons, uhhhhh she’s not into sour. So the lemons will go in a bowl as decoration and maybe she’ll look up some other recipes. She could make lemonade but truthfully, it’s much easier buying it than juicing lemons haha!
