HOW TO ORGANIZE A SMALL CLOSET TO MAXIMIZE SPACE

Diana Elizabeth Steffen, dianaelizabethblog.com

I know small spaces

I have experience with small spaces - we live in a 1952 home with modest size closets. I have found ways to make them more efficient and also FUN! Let me show you what I did to my master closet. STEP INSIDE >>

ORGANIZE BY SLEEVE TYPE

I organize by sleeveless, short sleeve, long sleeve, and in the back I have outerwear. Within those sections, I organize by color.

1

ADD GOOD LIGHTING!

Never underestimate what a bright LED light will bring to your space. If you can't see it, you won't wear it and if you can't see in the space, you won't want to stay in there long.

2

HAVE A LONG HANG FOR DRESSES AND LONG SKIRTS

When redesigning your closet or adjusting rods, keep in mind you will want a section for long hang clothing items.

3

USE GARMENT ORGANIZERS

Label where items go - sleeveless, long sleeve, formal dresses, day dresses, etc. TIP: It makes it easier for you to see how much you own and will help your spouse put items in the right spot.  *wink*

4

ORGANIZE BAGS AND CLUTCHES

A letter sorter can work as a clutch holder too! Use the space overhead to house your bags and clutches.

5

USE BOXES THAT HAVE WINDOWS

Seeing means using. Mystery boxes won't be opened. It helps to see what is inside and easily accessible is a plus!

6

USE CLEAR DIVIDERS FOR ORGANIZATION

Something about clear makes it feel more airy and roomy in a small closet. Use these plastic dividers (found at The Container Store) to separate long shelves so sweaters don't fall over.

7

USE THE BACK OF YOUR CLOSET DOOR

Whether you place an over the door shoe rack, or a jewelry closet on the back, there is extra space to store something.

8

Example of a jewelry armoire that hangs over the door.

MAKE IT FUN AND ADD WALLPAPER!

This is a removable adhesive wallpaper and I also covered an electrical box in my closet! Make your small space charming with some wallpaper.
