I've been in the industry for almost 20 years and want to share tips on how to find a modeling or acting agent. I also share how to be best prepared and what to submit.
GO TO THE SAG/AFTRA SITE
Search under “locals” tab and they list agencies under “Local AFTRA Franchised Agents”. Not all agencies are SAG licensed – typically ones that have an acting board are licensed but this is a good start. Drop down your location and hit "search".
HAVE A GOOD HEADSHOT
You usually need some test shots already like a solid headshot for acting or any modeling shots. If you sign, there's a change you need a reshoot so be prepared.
LOOK UP THE AGENCY'S WEBSITE
Look for the agency's submission/open call information. Wear natural makeup, consider skinny jeans, and a black tank. Actors will be asked to read. Models will asked to walk.
IT'S OK IF YOU HEAR NO
If you hear a no, go to the next agency, no big deal! Sometimes you look like an actor they already have signed so they are full, don’t take it personally. You can always try again.
EXTRA TIPS + THINGS TO KNOW
There may be an online listing database fee – it can vary around $120 a year. In modeling there are height requirements, but they really are preferences.
It doesn’t cost anything to sign with an agency. The only thing an agency will do is present you with a contract if they want to sign you and see if you have an acceptable headshot to market you.
In some states, you can only sign with one agent. In California, you can sign with multiple agencies in different counties. The only issue is you would have to drive to all the auditions.
