How to hang cafe string lights for patio or backyard

Sharing how to hang backyard string lights, tips and tools you need to complete this project in an afternoon. There's nothing like a nice glow of string lights in the evenings.

Have a plan

Once you have your cafe string lights, it's time to determine how you will hang them - from the side of your home to a tree, or from a tall post cemented in concrete to another post.  There are light hanging kits, and I suggest using aluminum wire that may or may not come with kits.

If hanging string lights from a tree...

Use tree straps! Yes, the ones that you would use for a hammock. They will not harm the tree as it grows.

Dim the lights

LED lights are bright and might be too bright for your space  if you have a lot of strings attached.  By adding a dimmer and remote control to the string lights, it can help you adjust the brightness of the LED lights and set the mood. I prefer 25% power.

Protect plug connections

Ideal for keeping water and snow away from light plug connections, protect them with cord protectors.

The most important thing is to have a good aluminum wire and zip ties to attach the lights to the wire.
