I hosted a casual fall Friendsgiving get together with friends I missed and I know are always down to book a sitter to watch their kids and come over. A Sunday night was a perfect excuse to gather with Decoy and toast the beginning of the holiday season.
I ordered food delivery from one of my favorite local restaurants, Postino – they specialize in bruschetta boards and oh my goodness I eat there probably once a week at least. Recently I ate there three times in a week, that’s how good it is!
I prefer to order food and have it delivered since I enjoy focusing on the atmosphere which includes lighting, decor and tablescape. I love to host, and that’s the part I enjoy the most! I set up as much as I could the night before with my friend Michelle who was visiting in town, and added the florals a few hours before my guests arrived. I usually spend weeks designing parties in my mind – I am all for casual eat in front of the TV and catch up time, but when you have a few friends over, elevate your party, bring out the decor!
I picked up this stylist table rod from Terrain (Anthropologie’s garden store) and strung some lights and fresh florals on it. It made a beautiful setting for a food and drink bar and friends could go back and serve themselves. I love that I can make this seasonal with any type of florals. I will probably do this on an outdoor dining table for a party of 6, but for this evening I thought a good skinny long table would work for an appetizer wine table so guest can mingle, sit and enjoy the nice weather.
If you worry about tablecloths not fitting your table, do what I did and layer them. A basic long white tablecloth works and I folded the edges under to make it the perfect width.
Appetizers and wine was outdoors and dinner was indoors. Since it as a Sunday night I figured starting the night early was a good idea so I asked friends to arrive at 5 pm for appetizers and drinks. Since it wasn’t dark it was nice for our guests can enjoy time outside and we can start the night earlier, spend more time together and dinner can start at 6 pm. Even if it’s say three hours later as dinner parties usually go, it ends up being just past 9 pm when guests start to depart, and that’s not too late – especially for a Sunday evening.
I did make dinner though, soup! It was an easy recipe that could be prepared the night before and simmer an hour before serving.
The appetizer wine plates were a hit! Everyone thought it was so convenient to be able to eat with one hand and hold your plate with another. If you have a lot of guests and not enough seating or tables, having these handy plates allow guests to mingle standing, move around and they can still eat without having to put anything down. I picked them up at Macy’s, they are by Red Vanilla and come in square or oval shape.
We had so many laughs around the table once we went inside for soup and bread, and more wine, it was such an amazing and memorable night! I love a night where friends are laughing so hard and connecting with new ones. I gave my couples a bag of pumpkin latte popcorn from Whole Foods as a little after dinner snack and parting gift to enjoy at home and with the kiddos. I tell you, I really milk the seasons and indulge in every flavor as much as I can.
Invite some friends over and make those memories, don’t worry if you can’t cook, just order something, grab a bag of salad and chips and salsa, have wine on hand and you’re good to go. You can even grab some box soup if you don’t want to make soup, a loaf of bread and you’re done. Remember it’s about the company!
Check out the Decoy Wine Finder to find a bottle near you and have plenty on hand for your next gathering. Toast the holidays with Decoy and happy memory making with those you love this season. Cheers!
Diana Elizabeth lives for this time of gathering. She was also told there’s one less weekend compared to last year for the Christmas holidays which makes sense on why they seem to suddenly feel like they are here and going to be over before we know it *cry* So invite your friends, be intentional with your time and enjoy every person in your life, cheers to that!
