My garden is bursting with fresh basil and tomatoes all summer long, and I wanted to share this easy, fresh ingredient recipe – Italian sausage penne pasta.
When I lived in Los Angeles I loved going to the The Original Farmer’s Market right by The Grove, and now in Phoenix, we enjoy growing what we can seasonally in our garden beds – which lucky for us are long seasons!
An easy addition to this summer recipe is adding Prego® Farmers’ Market, new at Walmart, filled with ingredients you’d find at your local farmer’s market like vine-ripened tomatoes, garlic and basil, picked at the peak of freshness just like you went to the farmer’s market!
This dish reminds me of when I was a newlywed, it was so easy and a great go-to and I’ve made this on several occasions for guests. You can make it vegetarian by leaving out the sausage.
I prefer to make this during the summer so I can grab fresh basil right outside our door. Since the sauce already is made of tomatoes, you can opt to leave the additional tomatoes out – we just like to include it for texture and we often have a plethora of tomatoes so we try to integrate them into every meal.

Step 4
Make sauce. Add sliced onions and tomatoes to pan. Cook until softened, add 1 cup of Prego® Farmers’ Market – Roasted Garlic (or marinara), stir. Season with salt and pepper.
Step 5
Stir in sauce in cooked penne pasta pot until pasta is coated. Add basil leaves, ripping leaves before adding. Season with salt and pepper. Stir in parmesan cheese.
Serve with additional parmesan cheese.
Enjoy!
