Tufted ottoman from Facebook Marketplace

Before image, I had some tables in the middle just felt so formal and our chairs sit high so an ottoman seemed necessary.

The garden room was feeling a bit uncomfortable with Benjamin complaining about how he was sitting, and we noticed guests felt awkward in the chairs even though everything was comfortable, all the seats were high. Comfort is so important, and that is part of what creates a luxury feeling, not just looks.

I originally wanted a leather ottoman, an old one from RH but it is no longer made. The leather ottomans now are very contemporary with steel legs and it just didn’t fit my taste or this room. I think looks great in other people’s homes, but it just didn’t make my heart sing for this room.

Then I came across this custom upholstered gold tufted ottoman in the perfect height, and length. It was tough to see the vision but then I thought, but I think I can see it! I think I can for $150! So after two messages on FBMP, and no response since those messages go to a different folder, I direct messaged her on FB and got a response right away!

I picked it up the next day and as soon as it was in my trunk, I immediately drove to H&R Fabrics, a new store to me (but it’s been around since 1965) that has high end discount upholstery fabrics, trim and furniture legs and more. I grabbed swatches (asked if they could cut some) and I ran to the car to see what looked best. I had hand ripped off the old trim which was just glue gunned on as most trim is. I used a small line on top of it just incase I ever wanted to change it again because you know, it’s me.

I would love to tell you the trim name but it said discontinued on the roll and that was it.

I knew I needed a brown to match but needed some other color like green or yellow in the Italian rug, or blue that is all in my house and on my reupholstered hickory chairs I also bought from an estate sale, to help tie the room together.

I got it for $15 a yard, so that was around $80. So the cost of $80 trim and $150 ottoman, and my glue gun, what a steal for a lovely ottoman!

Isn’t the crazy how different it looks without the red and gold trim? It was also a day of overcast mixed with sunshine so it looks different in some photos. The trim is longer than the previous trim and someone in my Thrift with Makerista club on FB said the ottoman looks taller with the longer trim. I think they are right!

Anyway that’s my FBMP adventure! I’m glad I didn’t take no response for an answer and I persisted in getting in contact with the seller, she was so kind! And I would say if you have to match something just put it in your car and get swatches to really make sure. Looking at a photo or going off memory won’t always work – I almost bought a trim off eBay and so glad I didn’t because it wouldn’t have worked as well as this one!

Then we had friends over and we all had our feet on the ottoman, all 6 of us! What does that tell you? We certainly needed it!
