I mentioned a few weeks ago that I was excited to partner with a wine expert to cover all the parts of hostessing! John Caplan, owner of GrapesWine.com sent over a few bottles from around the world to give some expertise on wine pairings with some of my favorite foods.
So those of you who are really into wine and have wine fridges and cellars – I know a few of you, this is for you! And for the hostesses like me, a few tips to make it easy on you.
These wines come from around the world including Argentina, Italy and New Zealand!
I chose some generic – yet delicious dishes that you can find almost anywhere – these specific dishes are from a popular spot in Phoenix called La Grande Orange, but that doesn’t matter because you can find similar at a restaurant near you – or make them yourself.
The takeaway are suggestions from GrapesWine.com on what wine to pair it with and an introduction to some new labels you should have at your next gathering!
^^ I made these 3 feet long serving boards myself! A post coming up soon how I made them but meanwhile aren’t they perfect for pizza and a load of French fries?
We’re going to leave them out for when we host weekly so breads and jams can be thrown on there.
Lately I’ve decided to leave some things to the experts – like the food, unless I want to make the food, or the wine pairings, in this case GrapesWine.com has great expertise and you can call them to talk wine! They love to chat and help understand your palate and make recommendations. They taste 15,000 to 20,000 wines a year!
Have you thought about using herbs as a centerpiece? When it’s on the table, guests can pick at them and put the fresh herbs right on their plate! I’ll just put them straight into the garden after.
Now that’s fresh!
I recently gave away some stackable wine glasses because they were difficult to clean. It’s probably because we need a new dishwasher – and though I recently bought us stemless glasses, Benjamin said they were too small. I suppose any wine drinker would prefer a nice bigger glass, so I bought these handmade glasses from CB2. I love the shape, so modern!
Let’s talk about pairings, these wines were recommended by John Caplan, owner of GrapesWine.com. His father and brother work in the business. He started GrapesWine.com after college and moved to America from South Africa hoping to bring South African wine to America and expanded to provide wine from around the world for the past 25 years. They specialize in selling wines by the case.
Now onto the food and your favorite part, wine! A few ideas on what to bring to the table.
^^ Caesar salad with Tacora Chardonnay 2013 from Colchagua; Chile
^^ Shredded kale salad with Val Divina Prosecco Sparkling Wine from Veneto; Italy
^^ Avocado pizza paired with the Wairau River Sauvignon Blanc 2016 from Marlborough; New Zealand
^^ Classic Margherita pizza with 2010 Argante Super Tuscan from Italy
^^ Cheeseburger paired with 2004 Solar Malbec from Mendoza; Argentina
Passionate about wine, you can call them and talk about wine, tell them what you’re looking for and they can make recommendations. 1-800-434-WINE (9463). As you continue to order they make recommendations based upon previous wines you’ve enjoyed and introduce you to new labels – it’s the perfect way to discover wines from all over the world.

I always paired wine with different cheeses and cold cuts but never tried pairing it with pizza and burgers. It looks like something i would love to try. The serving board you made is amazing!
