10 TIPS TO MAXIMIZE THRIFT + ANTIQUE STORE SHOPPING

SHOPPING TIPS

Who doesn't love the hunt? Here are some tips to make your shopping experience even more productive!

TURN TO THE LEFT

1

Most shoppers head to the right of a store when they walk in.  If you turn to the left (or the opposite flow) you won't be behind other customers.

LOOK UP

2

Glance up and see the top of bookcases for large objects, items hanging from the ceilings, look all the way up as not to miss anything including fabulous lighting!

LOOK DOWN

3

Of course I'd mention down too, way low on the ground, even behind signs. I found this plate on the floor and bought it! Sometimes it's worth bending your knees!

ASK FOR THE SPECIFIC ITEM YOU ARE LOOKING FOR

4

If you have a specific item you are looking for, ask an employee. They see items come in all the time and might have the perfect item!

GO AROUND TWICE

5

The second time I walk around is when I really slow down and find even MORE! How did that silver plated tray not catch my eye the first time? Glad it did the second!

HAVE A LIST BUT THEN FORGET ABOUT THE LIST

6

I have a list on my phone of what I hope to find at specific stores but I don't to take away the fun in the unexpected find! The first time I visit a store I take it all in and enjoy, then the second time around I focus to see if anything on my list pops out at me!

BRING A TAPE MEASURE

7

I carry a lightweight small tape measure with me at all times and I jot down specific wall dimensions in my home. I am on a mission! The front desk usually always have measuring tapes on loan if you forget.

DISCOUNT? FIRM?

8

This can be a touchy subject but if you find a pricier piece but it is out of your budget, you can ask the front desk of the antique store if the store allows negotiating with a dealer, usually this is OK on large items. Thrift stores do not allow haggling.

LOOK IN CABINETS

9

I rarely looked in cabinets but I began to slow down. Often the small, dainty treasures can be found behind locked cabinet doors and it's worth a look to stand and take it in!

TAKE LOTS OF PHOTOS

10

If you aren't sure and it's costly, don't buy it! Take a photo, take measurements, go home and think about it. I have found in those circumstances I am glad I didn't impassively buy it. However, be aware it might be gone so if you love it, get it!
